Dr. Abigail Pfiester serves as the Communication Department Chair at Concordia University in Austin, Texas. In addition to teaching undergraduate courses, she consults with MBA students at the University of Texas and leads workshops in writing, presentation skills, and interviewing. Dr. Pfiester conducts research on gender and communication issues. She frequently presents her studies at conferences and other academic settings--for example, in 2011 she was the keynote speaker at the University of North Carolina's Women in Business Conference. She also spent a week at Rancho La Puerta Spa Resort in Tecate, Mexico giving evening lectures. Dr. Pfiester earned her Bachelor degree fromBaylor University in theHonor Program, her Masters in Communication from Cornell University, and her Ph.D. from the University of Texas in both Communication Studies and Social Psychology. She has taught at Cornell University, the University of Hawaii, Chaminade University of Honolulu, and the University of Texas. In her free time, Dr. Pfiester is an avid fly-fisherwoman, traveler, and mom to her seven-month son. 

 

MORNING SESSION (with break out group discussions)

Ways to Influence People (the Power of Persuasion)—Based on the best-selling book by Dale Carnegie, “How to Win Friends and Influence People”, Dr. Abigail Pfiester will highlight a few of his key findings that are rooted in biblical passages. Mr. Carnegie’s teachings are as relevant today as they were when he wrote them in the ‘30s. Dr. Pfiester teaches Persuasive Communication at Concordia University and enjoys pointing out the pervasiveness of persuasive appeals in her students’ everyday lives.

 

 

AFTERNOON SESSION (with break out group discussions)

The Five Love Languages—Based on Gary Chapman’s insightful research, Dr. Pfiester will present the five different ways we like to give and receive love. In addition, she will guide you through a “quiz” so you can discover your significant others’ preferred style.  Simply knowing your love style can shed light on questions and provide understanding on conflicts you may have experienced in your relationships. Dr. Pfiester teaches Interpersonal Relationships at Concordia University where she lectures on the latest love research.
